Image
Hello ! Let's be honest. Your child WILL: drive you crazy make messes move super slow pester each other be disrespectful or even worse, steal all the Nutella (gasp!) These are the very simple strategies that work wonders in helping you stay safe and model adult behavior. Strategy #1: Use Time Time is free. It’s readily available to all of us. But we forget what an amazing resource it is! We can use time to: calm down think about what to do heal build connection wait for them to grow out of it! This can look like: 1) Simply walking away from a situation in order to give yourself time to think clearly. 2) Saying to your child “I need some time to think about this. I’ll set the timer for 30 minutes and then we’ll come back to it.” 3) Realizing that the reason your child is having such a difficult time listening to you is because he feels discon...

Lesson 2: Why Yelling Doesn't Work

Image
Hello ! Why doesn’t yelling work? Well, let’s be clear here. It does work. In the short term. If you scream at your child to “KNOCK IT OFF!” they will knock it off! Children are motivated by fear. We all are! But what we don’t realize is that taking away a child’s will has long-term negative effects. Three Long Term Effects of Yelling 1) It creates an environment that is coercive. Your home becomes a home that children want to: escape from avoid and get even with As children age, they try to break free from the coercive environment that they are in. They reach out to peers for dependence because they can’t rely on their parents for encouragement and love. This is not a good formula for success in adolescence! To learn more about the lasting effects of yelling, view my IG highlight on "yelling" HERE: VIDEO: "The Negative Effect...

Lesson 1: Why We Yell

Image
Hello ! So, Why Do You Yell? Here’s what we know about emotion: anger is always secondary. ALWAYS. Anger is always hiding something else! Those hidden feelings are vulnerable. They look like shame, discouragement, inadequacy, sadness, embarrassment, anxiety, and the list goes on and on. Vulnerable feelings need protection so we guard them. My oldest daughter (bless her heart) was unfortunately on the receiving end of all my frustration. I knew that what I was doing was wrong, but instead I directed all of those triggered and annoyed feelings onto her and what SHE was doing wrong. Fast forward several years when I learned about Positive Parenting. Life. Changing! In fact, it changed my life so much that I founded @simplyonpurpose , an Instagram feed that has grown over 650K followers in 7 years. What does it mean to “Stay Safe”? A safe parent is a parent that children want to...

The magical way to improve behavior

Image
Hi friend, Do you ever find yourself saying the same thing over and over again? Do you need a more effective way to teach? Try role plays! They are MAGIC!✨ Why? Research shows that role plays: Build confidence Teach problem-solving Help children develop empathy Read my post that will teach you step by step about how to start doing them today! Learn About Role Plays There is a quote from child development expert Karyn Purvis that I love: "It takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain... unless it is done with play. In that case it takes between 10 and 20 repetitions. " Use the magic of role plays to lessen those repetitions, friends! ...
