A super simple family activity for the New Year!

Image
Hi friend, It's the last day of 2024! I have really loved talking to my girls about their favorite parts of the last year. Here's a super simple family activity you can do today! Choose your family's "Best of" 2024! First, come up with 8-10 categories of favorite things your family members will vote on. Examples: family trip, book, game, meal, funny moment, holiday, at-home fun, new toy, or house project. Write each category on a piece of paper and lay all the papers out, or tape them to a wall. Give your kiddos some sticky notes, and have them write their favorites for each category. For younger children, ask them what they liked and write it for them. Take a family vote for each category, and consolidate all the answers into a "Best of 2024" list for your family. Once you're finished, you can even talk about family goals or adventures you want to have in the upcoming year. I hope you have as much fun as we do reminiscing about ...

Lesson 2: Examples and script!

Image
Hello friend! Let's be honest. Your child WILL: back talk not want to do their chores ignore the directions that you give dislike vegetables have bad attitudes or even worse, steal all the Nutella (gasp!) These are the very simple strategies that work wonders in creating momentum and getting the good going. Strategy #1: Stay curious and open minded. Your kids have good ideas too, and the way that they are experiencing the world matters. So before you jump in with an agenda, LISTEN. Ask questions. Seek to understand. It builds trust and loyalty. This sounds like: "Tell me more about why you feel that way." "How can I help here?" "I believe you." Strategy #2: Give a high probability request. Help your kiddo get into their "yes brain" by asking them to do something that is an easier YES! Begin with something that they want to do, in order to get them to do what you want them to do. You can do this by: ...

Lesson 1: The Secret

Image
Hello friend! So, THE big Secret? It's something you've probably heard before, but now it's time for it to change your life: Behavioral Momentum. Simply put: you get the good behavior going and you keep it going. Why does it matter SO MUCH? Because the real secret: the person who has the greatest power to create positive behavioral momentum in children is THE PARENT. Understanding your ability to COMPLETELY CHANGE THE MOMENTUM in your home, not only stops power struggles today, but long term ! Let me show you how creating behavioral momentum stops power struggles. Truth #1: Be what you want to see. Take a closer look at your own behavior. Why do certain things trigger worry or fear? It usually has far more to do with your own story than what's happening with your child. Our thoughts about the events in our lives (rather than the events themselves) are what cause us to get angry and rigid. Practice being a CALM AUTHORITY. Don't have buttons...

My oldest daughter was the gateway to battles of who could assert their will the strongest! Fast forward several years when I learned about Positive Parenting. It completely changed my life. In fact, it changed my life so much that I founded @simplyonpurpose , and now teach positive parenting to a community of over 650K families. Why do we fall into power struggles? The real hidden reason? FEAR. We get stuck in a pattern that is driven by fear. We're afraid of what could happen if we aren't in charge, and our kids are afraid of n...
